Like Christmas, Easter is a Christian holiday that has lost its spiritual or Christ-centered focus for many people. If you want to create a more spiritual Easter, try these tips for making this holiday more meaningful for you and your family…
“The resurrection gives my life meaning and direction and the opportunity to start over no matter what my circumstances.” ~ Robert Flatt.
A wonderful way to increase spirituality during the Easter season is to apply what Christ did — starting a new stage of life, for instance – to your own life. For more ways to soak up the joy and peace of Easter, read He Is Risen: Reflections on Easter and the Forty Days of Lent
. And, here are five ways to be more spiritual at Easter…
5 Ways to Create a More Spiritual Easter Holiday
1. Reflect on what Easter means to you, as a family. Giving up something for Lent can be a spiritual way to celebrate Easter, especially if you take time to reflect on what you’re giving up, why you’re giving it up, and what “Christ is risen” means to you. This reflection can be even more meaningful if you include your spouse, kids and other family members. Praying with your partner and kids is a fantastic way to bring meaning to both your relationship and the holiday. If you practice Lent (and even if you don’t), dedicate a time every day or once a week for an Easter reflection and prayer.
2. Find spiritual Easter quotations, and talk about them. Quotations can start great discussions, and add meaning to your holiday! The quip above – about starting a new life at Easter – is a quotation that can be shared and savored with fellow believers. Another spiritual Easter thought is, “Easter says you can put truth in a grave, but it won’t stay there.” (Clarence W. Hall). To increase your spiritual experience at Easter, find quotations that make you think about what Christ’s resurrection means for your life today.
3. Go to church – but not for a service. This is a wonderful way to increase spirituality during religious holidays, from Mimi Doe, author of Busy but Balanced: Practical and Inspirational Ways to Create a Calmer, Closer Family
. “If you attend a particular church or temple, arrange to take your child there when there is no service,” she says. “In the quiet sacred space talk about how it feels to be there, explain the symbols, and talk about the upcoming holiday and it’s significance in your religious tradition. Hold hands and feel the energy of those who have prayed in this holy space.”
4. Combine the fun parts of Easter (the egg hunt!) with the meaningful parts. Hunting for chocolate eggs and bunnies is fun for everyone, and it doesn’t have to end just because you want to be more spiritual at Easter! But don’t just focus on the chocolate, marshmallow chicks, and Easter baskets. Incorporate things that are meaningful to you and your family, such as items reminiscent of Jesus Christ’s resurrection and life.
5. Focus on what you can give to your neighborhood or city. Instead of focusing on making Easter crafts with your kids and cooking a big Easter dinner, brainstorm ways to uplift the people in your area. Can you help a family in need? Can you and your family volunteer with an organization, church, or homeless shelter? The deepest spirituality and meaning can be found in helping others – especially people who wouldn’t otherwise be touched.
