Spiritual Health Benefits of Meditation

Research shows the many mental, emotional and physical health benefits of meditating, but what about the spiritual health benefits of meditation? Studies have shown that meditation brings brainwave patterns into an alpha state, which improves blood pressure, lowers heart rate and cortisol levels, reducing stress and physical pain. Meditation has also been known to decrease depression and anxiety, and improve relaxation and overall mood balance.

So we know meditating is good for us on a mind and body level, but how does one measure and describe the spiritual benefits? It’s not easy, but I’m going to try from my own personal and professional experience. If you’re new to meditation you might be interested in Jack Kornfield’s book above, Meditation for Beginners.

Spiritual Health Benefits of Meditation

Here’s what I’ve personally discovered from my 10 years of meditating, plus what I’ve witnessed from teaching clients and students various meditation techniques. Meditation connects you to deeper love, intuitive wisdom, higher states of being, the present moment, and the core of who you really are.

Your heart opens to deeper love. It says in the Bhagavad Gita, “Still your mind in me, still yourself in me, and without a doubt you shall be united with me, Lord of Love, dwelling in your heart.” When we stop thinking compulsively, we stop analyzing and judging. This allows us to hear the whisperings of our heart and soul. It’s been said that love is the language of God, so when we still our mind and emotions, we unite with the source of love. From this place we know that no one can take our love away or truly break our heart, as we are continually filled with the essence of love.

You access intuitive wisdom. Our intellectual mind thinks it knows the answer to all problems or can at least figure it out if given enough time. In reality, our mental capabilities only go as far as what we can see, touch, measure, research, and know in the physical realm. On a spiritual level, we are connected to everything within and beyond this world. When we meditate we connect to our higher self and access this ancient and intuitive wisdom. “Meditation brings wisdom; lack of mediation leaves ignorance. Know well what leads you forward and what holds you back, and choose the path that leads to wisdom.” ~ Buddha

You move into the present moment and have more time. “Some people think that meditation takes time away from physical accomplishment. Taken to extremes, of course, that’s true. Most people, however, find that meditation creates more time than it takes,” says Peter McWilliams, and I agree. Since meditating on a regular basis, my mind has calmed and I live more in the present moment, rather than in the past or future. Being in the present moment slows time down somehow. I can’t explain it through physics, but I know through experience that I accomplish more and have more time to relax and play.

You know who you are at your core. “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience.” ~ Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. In the busyness of daily life, focusing on external situations and people, it’s easy to become mind and body senior, letting our thoughts and emotions run our life. But when we spend regular time centering within the stillness of our soul, we know we are bigger than our mind and body. We connect to the expansiveness of our divine self and we learn to live from that spiritual spaciousness.

You operate from higher states of being. Touching into your spiritual bigness puts everything else into perspective. There’s no need for seriousness, judgment, scarcity, or resentments because you live from a place of ease, amusement, acceptance, abundance, and forgiveness. Joy becomes your natural state of being. “Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace and gratitude.” ~ Denis Waitley.
