Prayer Journals and Spiritual Diaries – What’s the Difference?

Both prayer journals and spiritual diaries can lead to a more spirit-filled life – but what’s the difference between the two? Truth be told, I didn’t even know there was a difference until I read “Keeping a Prayer Diary” in Prayer: The Hidden Fire: Journal and Companion Guide! But there is — and it’s very interesting.

“Keeping a prayer diary is well worth the trouble and time it takes, because it is so easy to lose sight of any overall pattern in one’s prayer life without it,” writes Tom Harpur in Prayer: The Hidden Fire: Journal and Companion Guide. “You so easily forget or overlook the way in which prayer has indeed been answered or, quite often, not answered as we’d hoped and yet in a more marvelous way still!”

Tree of Life leather journal (pictured) would work well as either a prayer journal or a spiritual diary. I think it’s important to choose a journal that you love the feel of, that makes you feel comforted, happy, and peaceful.

Here are a few differences between prayer journals and spiritual diaries, plus a few reasons keeping track of prayers and your spiritual life is a good thing to do… Continue reading ‘Prayer Journals and Spiritual Diaries – What’s the Difference?’ »

Honor Your Spiritual Gifts and Psychic Abilities

Most of us were not raised to honor our spiritual gifts and psychic abilities. They were often discounted by adults and squashed by naysayers. These natural abilities don’t go away though; they lie dormant waiting to be cultivated.

If you are sensitive to energy, have a sixth sense about what’s going on, can read auras and energy, or are able to connect with non-physical beings, you are utilizing senses that go beyond the physical and into the spiritual.

Many people attribute these as special or rare, and some even judge them as bad or wrong. But in reality, we are all spiritual beings with spiritual abilities; we just haven’t brought them into our awareness.

There’s no need to fear, discount or cover up these spiritual gifts. Even the Bible recognizes their value in the New Testament:

“The manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; to another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another diverse kinds of tongues.” ~ I Corinthians 12: 7-10

You can honor your spiritual gifts and psychic abilities by understanding their purpose and developing them further. I’ve offered tips on this below, but for another source of inspiration read the book, Discover Your God-Given Gifts. Continue reading ‘Honor Your Spiritual Gifts and Psychic Abilities’ »

How Do You Love God With All Your Heart? 5 Tips

Christian or not – how do you love God with all your heart? These tips for loving God are based on my four decades of loving God, leaving God, returning to God, and falling in love with God all over again…

Before the tips, a quip (or three)…

”Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” ~ Deuteronomy 6:5

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” ~ Mark 12:30

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind.” ~ Luke 10:27.

Hmmm…I think these three different authors of three different parts of Scripture agree on one thing: we should love God. But, what does that mean? The first clue is in Zondervan NIV Study Bible – the more you read it, the more you’ll know God’s heart. The closer you are to God’s heart, the easier it’ll be to love Him!

And here are five more tips for loving God with your heart, mind, soul, and strength… Continue reading ‘How Do You Love God With All Your Heart? 5 Tips’ »

How to Have Compassion for Others

Many people want to have compassion for others, but they get blocked by fear, anger, or judgment. Viewing others as bad, wrong, or undeserving only serves to close the heart and dampen the soul.

Seeing others through the eyes of equality, unconditional love, and kindness leads to forgiveness and acceptance, which are components of compassion. We can’t fake this state of open heartedness, but we can develop it over time by adopting new perspectives.

Below are four tips for you to explore on developing a compassionate heart. For a Buddhist perspective and a variety of guided meditations, read Jeffrey Hopkins book on Cultivating Compassion.

But first, a few words from His Holiness the Dalai Lama: “I believe that compassion, a sense of kindness and warm heartedness toward others is the basic source of all happiness. Therefore, I have no doubt that every individual who attempts to cultivate it contributes to creating a happier, more peaceful world.” Continue reading ‘How to Have Compassion for Others’ »

Christian Prayers for Couples – 5 Ways to Approach God Together

One of my readers asked for Christian prayers for couples, so I dug into my heart and soul – and my prayer books – and came up with five ways to approach God together…

Did you know that only 8% of Christian couples pray together on a regular basis? That’s according to Pastor Jeremiah of Westside Church in Seattle. He’s a strong proponent of couples prayer (not surprisingly, seeing as he’s a pastor and all), because prayer strengthens marriages and spiritual connections to God.

“If you’ve made a commitment to pray, but it’s been a few days or weeks since you’ve followed through, don’t give up!” says this pastor. He reminds Christian couples that it’s not easy to pray together regularly. If it were easy, divorce rates would be lower.

One of the best ways to make prayer a habit is to use a daily devotional Bible or book. For instance, The Love Dare Day by Day: A Year of Devotions for Couples is perfect for couples who want to pray together, but can’t get into the habit.

And here are a few ideas for Christian couples… Continue reading ‘Christian Prayers for Couples – 5 Ways to Approach God Together’ »

Developing a Daily Spiritual Practice

Developing a daily spiritual practice takes time and dedication. At first it may feel forced or uncomfortable, but overtime it will become the foundation for your spiritual life.

It’s amazing how most of us grow up learning healthy habits for our mind and body, but not for our soul. We know too well the benefits of (and the cost of not) taking care of our teeth, eating nutritious foods, enjoying fresh air and exercise, and getting adequate rest and sleep. But we’re not experientially taught how to connect with the Source of all life and live from our higher self.

Many are raised attending church, a synagogue or mosque once a week to hear inspiring words and scripture. While those offer an important conceptual understanding of God and spirituality, they don’t necessarily provide an experience of spiritual awareness.

As Barbara De Angelis notes, “In order to experience everyday spirituality, we need to remember that we are spiritual beings spending some time in a human body.” Too often, we forget this and think we are the mind and body. Our thoughts and emotions dominate, suffocating the sound of our soul.

Developing a daily spiritual practice reminds us of who we really are. It supports us to live from a higher perspective of love, compassion and wisdom. I’ve offered tips below on how to bring spirituality into your daily life, Continue reading ‘Developing a Daily Spiritual Practice’ »

How Prayer Helps Abused Women Cope With Domestic Violence

Research on how prayer helps women cope with domestic violence reveals the benefits of praying, and how prayer can be harmful. Praying helps abused women stay strong, faithful, and spiritual…but it can also keep them stuck in an unhealthy relationship.

First, what is prayer?

“Prayer is exhaling the spirit of man and inhaling the spirit of God.” ~ Edwin Keith.

And that’s one way prayer helps victims cope: it infuses them — and everyone who prays — with a calm, loving, compassionate, forgiving spirit that lights the way and eases the burden. If you yearn for a deeper prayer life, read Power Thoughts: 12 Strategies to Win the Battle of the Mind — it’s one of Joyce Meyer’s bestselling books on prayer.

If you’re being abused by your partner, read Why Does He Do That?: Inside the Minds of Angry and Controlling Men. And call a distress line or violence hotline — there are people who want to help you! You’re also welcome to comment below — but I strongly encourage you to get in-person help.

Here’s what a new research study says about the effects of praying on victims of domestic violence… Continue reading ‘How Prayer Helps Abused Women Cope With Domestic Violence’ »

How to be Generous and Give From the Heart

When we give from the heart, instead of from guilt or duty, we offer joy and love and we experience this in return. With an open heart we discover how to be generous with every word, thought and action. Debbie Macomber, author of One Simple Act: Discovering the Power of Generosity, reminds us how “intentional acts of generosity can open our lives to the very best God has to offer.”

No matter what you give – money, time, or words of encouragement – do it from a place of loving kindness and watch your life blossom with joy and abundance. Continue reading ‘How to be Generous and Give From the Heart’ »

How to Increase Your Energy Levels With the Power of Intention

Wayne Dyer’s tips for increasing your energy levels are too good to keep to myself! We listened to The Power of Intention on a Vancouver-Edmonton road trip recently; my husband loved Wayne Dyer’s tips so much, he plans to listen to the audiobook regularly.

Here’s one of Dyer’s gems:

“If you focus on what others expect of you, you’ll continue to act on and attract more of what they desire for you,” he says. “But when you can shift your inner thoughts to what you intend to create and attract into your life, you will no longer have to give mental energy to what others want for you.”

Are you focused on other people’s expectations for your choices, actions, and life? Not only will this rob you of an authentic life, it’ll sap your energy. What you think about has a direct effect on how you feel – including how tired, frustrated, depressed, or happy you are. The more concerned you are with other people’s expectations, the more de-energized you’ll be.

What you think about directly affects your circumstances; your thoughts become things. This is just one of the life lessons in Wayne Dyer’s The Power of Intention: Learning to Co-Create Your World Your Way — it’s a book that belongs on every Spirituality Seekers’ bookshelf!

And, here are five tips for increasing your energy levels… Continue reading ‘How to Increase Your Energy Levels With the Power of Intention’ »

Set Spiritual Goals for the New Year

When we set spiritual goals for the New Year we create a foundation for material goals to blossom. If we focus solely on the external – the exercise program, the weight loss, the financial plans, the career success – we end up feeling empty, even if we do achieve them. When we place our attention on the essence of these objectives, the true reason we want to achieve them, we feel whole and balanced. From this place it becomes much easer to manifest our heart’s desires.

I was inspired last night watching Michael Bernard Beckwith’s DVD, Spiritual Liberation – Fulfilling Your Soul’s Potential. He reminded me of the importance of remembering my higher purpose in life; the reason I am here on the planet at this time. So when I sit down to reflect on my goals for the upcoming year, I will set spiritual goals first, and allow other plans to unfold from there. Continue reading ‘Set Spiritual Goals for the New Year’ »
