How does one maintain spiritual balance throughout the day in such a fast paced society, with a multitude of tasks to accomplish and external pressures to deal with? How do you touch into your spiritual center for renewal and serenity when so many distractions abound? It requires putting yourself first and creating new habits that connect you to your spiritual self and the Source of all life.
I wrote about the state of spiritual balance in the article, Being Spiritually Centered, and a reader commented, “As I read, it came to mind the practice of coming home to spiritual balance each day is a gift we give ourselves and everyone around us.” In this article, I offer tips on how to find and maintain this spiritual state throughout the day so you can give this to yourself and extend it to your friends, family, co-workers and community.
If you feel caught in the busyness of life and are looking for practical tools to help you slow down and simplify, read the book, Finding the Deep River Within: A Woman’s Guide to Recovering Balance and Meaning in Everyday Life
, pictured above. And for tips on connecting to your spiritual center, read on.
4 Ways to Stay Spiritually Centered Throughout the Day
1. Awareness. Recognizing when you are off balance provides the opportunity to retune to your spiritual center. Without this awareness you might spend the whole day grumbling and complaining, judging and reacting, or worrying and fretting and miss out on the richness of life. As soon as you notice your ego, thoughts or emotional reactions have taken charge, choose to center within by brining all of your attention into the center of your head, the center of your body, the center of your being. This will support you to maintain spiritual balance.
2.Neutrality. Judgments and reactivity keep us separate from our soul. They are a sign that our ego is in control. Practice viewing situations from a place of neutrality. Buddhist philosophy refers to this as equanimity; a non reactive viewpoint where you see what is happening without getting caught in it. It’s realizing that thoughts, emotions, situations and circumstances come and go, so there is no need to become attached or reactive. This state of being is calm and empowering. Reciting the mantra, “This too shall pass,” will help you to stay neutral.
3. Present. It’s easy to get caught in rehashing the past or rehearsing the future and miss out on the fullness of this moment. This creates a disassociation from yourself and the present where your power exists. Practice being present with each activity, person, sensation and emotion that comes before you. If you get lost in paperwork or the computer, create a signal (post-it-note, alarm clock, picture) to remind you to retune to your present surroundings throughout the day. Try an easy meditation technique such as focusing on your breath, thoughts or physical sensations for a few minutes as a way to connect to the power of the present moment.
4. Love. “All you need is love,” chimed the Beatles, and this is so true. When you are feeling full of love, you are spiritually balanced. Life becomes sweeter, lighter and more joyful. Love emanates from the spiritual center within each of us so it is easy to access. Simply focus on what you love about your family, friends, pets, the outdoors, or the God of your heart to ignite this spark within you. Look for the love within others, behind their façade of control, seriousness or grumpiness, as a way to connect to the soul in each person you encounter.
Play with these 4 ways to stay spiritually centered throughout the day and notice how it becomes easier to maintain spiritual balance on a daily basis.

This is a great list. Keeping all these things in mind and in practice can really change the tone of a day, or a life.
For me, being present and being neutral can sometimes pull against each other. It’s a challenge to be present and engaged without also being attached to a particular outcome. Being present also means staying with my own inner tension, working to get to the other side of it, without checking out in one way or another. That’s another challenge.
Thanks for the insightful post!
Thanks for your comment Susan.
It definitely can be challenging to stay present and neutral with inner tension and raw emotions. Yet what I’ve discovered over the years is that if I can be centered within my spiritual self, then I can be with whatever turbulence is surfacing and know that I am bigger than it. The emotions then become vibrations that I say hello to and watch process and release.
Another tip I could have added that helps with all of this is Amusement! The more amused I am, the more neutral I become and the easier it is to be present. It’s great how these tools/attitudes all support each other.

This is a wonderful post. Thank you. These are very helpful ways to stay connected throughout our often busy days.
Something I have personally found very helpful, in staying spiritually connected within the context of everyday life, is training myself to say “thank you” to everything that comes up…no exceptions. This has deepened my sense of gratitude and appreciation for all the little and big occurrences of each day, including the seemingly difficult ones. It has taken some time to learn this but has really been worth it.
I also use an energy-soul practice I find very helpful. I tap on my Message Center (heart chakra): “Dear beloved Message Center I love you. You have the power to open fully, to heal, to love, to release excess energy. Please open fully, open fully….or Love Love…heal heal….compassion compassion…”whatever comes to me. It’s surprisingly effective.
Recently this was put to the test when I experienced a series of ‘mishaps’ the week before I was to leave for India. The last one came the day before I was to leave. I was driving down the freeway, just hours away from flight departure time and only partially packed, when suddenly my radiator exploded! Gratitude and soul communication really helped me remain calm and move smoothly and quickly through what otherwise could have been a difficult situation. And I still made my plane…a day later!
Many thanks and many blessings,
Patricia
Thanks so much Patricia for sharing your gratitude and heart chakra practices with us – they sound lovely and empowering.
Offering appreciation for the difficult situations has often helped me to see the new opportunities that are arising out of them (which I wouldn’t have seen if I’d been in a place of blame or judgment).
I’m a big believer of the healing effects of energy work so I will try your heart chakra technique.
Thanks,
Gini
