Being Spiritual at Work – 5 Ways to Increase Workplace Spirituality

Do you wish you were more spiritual at work? Many spiritual or religious people leave their faith at home, partly because they don’t know how to create a spiritual workplace. These five tips for increasing spirituality at work may help…

Before the tips, a quip:

“When I use the word spirituality, I don’t necessarily mean religion; I mean whatever it is that helps you feel connected to something that is larger than yourself.” ~ Dean Ornish.

In this article, “spirituality” means what Ornish says: a feeling of connection to something bigger and more powerful than yourself. Religious people can feel spiritual, and spiritual people can feel religious…but the key is bringing your religion or spirituality into your daily life! For help with that, click Spirituality at Work: 10 Ways to Balance Your Life on the Job. And, read on for suggestions on moving towards a more spiritual workplace…

5 Tips for Increasing Spirituality at Work

1. Tie up those loose ends – do an excellent job! At church last Sunday, the pastor said that one of the biggest complaints about Christians at work is that they don’t do a good job. Doing your job well may seem like a “no-brainer”, but the truth is spiritual people aren’t necessarily working to the best of their abilities. To stay spiritual and connected to something larger than yourself at work, make sure you take care of even the peskiest of details.

2. Connect with your gifts and talents. It’s easier to be spiritual at work if your responsibilities revolve around your natural abilities and interests. If you’re in a job you dislike or can’t do well, talk to your supervisor about juggling duties or changing your job role. If you can’t connect with your gifts and talents at work, then learn how to do the job you have better, such as by taking workshops or finding a workplace mentor.

3. Take time out to reconnect with your source. What’s the source of your spirituality? To bring it into your workplace, you need to bring it into your workplace. This can mean saying a quick prayer or doing a short meditation on your coffee break. Or, you could read a passage of the Bible or one of your favorite books at lunch. Make it a point to bring the things that connect you to the source of your power into your daily schedule.

4. Learn how to deal with stress. I suspect that one of the biggest obstacles to moving towards a more spiritual workplace is stress…and the second could be difficult people at work. If you’re dealing with a lot of stress at work, find healthy ways to cope – both in and out of your spiritual life. The same goes with learning to deal with negative or bossy coworkers.

5. Recognize your barriers to a more spiritual workplace. Maybe it’s not stress that prevents you from spirituality at work. Maybe it’s the environment, your coworkers, or the type of job you have. The sooner you recognize and deal with the barriers to your spirituality at work, the sooner you’ll be able to feel connected no matter what happens during the day.

  1. This is a great blog post. The concepts are similar to a book that I’ve been able to preview before it is published, called Driving to Success: Let Your Spirit Take the Wheel. It will be published in May.

  2. Thanks for your comments, Sheila. The book sounds interesting!
