I want to underscore the importance of putting money into the hands of kids on a regular basis (an allowance for younger kids is the most popular...part-time job for older teens). Kids need hands-on, personal experience with money in order to truly understand how money works. Being in charge of their money also teaches them needs vs wants, prioritizing their spending, when the money is gone - it's gone, and setting personal financial goals to get those items that are a bit more pricey. When kids are responsible for their discretionary spending, it's amazing how frugal they can be. And for those kids who just spend it all...stick to the allowance "plan" and eventually they will learn to make different choices.
