**Who am I, and why did I write 75 Ways to Survive Pet Loss?**

My name is Laurie Pawlik-Kienlen; I created and run the “Quips and Tips” websites and have written five “Quips and Tips” ebooks. I wrote this one in honor of the cats I’ve loved and lost over the years — but my dog Jazz is the reason this ebook exists.

My husband and I had to take her back to the animal shelter six weeks after we adopted her. She was a beautiful German Shepherd/Black Lab cross — a good dog, but we couldn’t meet her exercise and attention needs. She had too much energy, and was way too strong for me (she weighed 75 pounds, and I couldn’t hold her back when she chased squirrels and skunks! We got sprayed by skunks twice in five weeks).

Surrendering her was the most difficult thing I’ve ever done. I started crying two days before we took her back, and was still crying two weeks later. I still wonder if we should’ve tried harder, should’ve learned more about dog training, should’ve kept her despite the problems.

I’m still grieving, regretting, and coping with her absence — and I feel almost as bad today as I did the day we took her back.
