Hi Lynn,

Thanks for being here -- you made my day :-)

Yes, it is acceptable to use information from books, articles, journals, newspapers, etc -- and of course always cite your sources. However, what is acceptable for one magazine or newspaper is not necessarily acceptable for another. So, the best way to make sure you're using and sourcing your info properly is to check with the editor or publication for whom you're writing.

I hope to see you around again soon.....

All best,
Laurie

Hello Laurie,

I think you have the most amazing sites on writing! I've found nothing that compares on the web. Thank you so much for sharing your invaluable information!

You are doing exactly (pretty much) what I am trying to do. I'm a recent English Literature Graduate from SFU and I am trying to learn the ropes of freelance writing. (I'm also in my mid-thirties and trying to conceive! I also love psychology and almost minored in it. We seem to have some things in common.)

I've noticed your post above regarding expert sources and you have provided a link about query letters. I was wondering if you happen to have the information about expert sources. I thoroughly enjoy researching and writing, but I want to be very clear what is acceptable to use as sources for publication. For example,is it acceptable to use information from academic articles (such as those found through SFU library)as long as I cite the authors? I love reading, so is it also acceptable to use information from books as long as I cite the author(s) within my text?

Thank you very much! I appreciate greatly what you are doing here!

Good day,

Hi Jim,

I think most magazines are interested in humor pieces! Humor is hard to pull off, and readers (and editors) appreciate it so much.

But, where to sell your humor article depends on the subject of your article. For instance, Reader's Digest is great for general interest pieces, while Men's Health magazine may be interested in male-oriented, edgy and quirky humor.

I suggest researching and pitching magazines that are related to the topic of your article. If you need help writing query letters, let me know -- I can paste the links to a few examples of query letters here, so you can get an idea of how to approach editors.

Good luck!

I thought you might be able to give me a paragraph or two for my book on friendships - and maybe even the peaceful aspects of self sufficient living - away from all the stress, etc. Anyway - to keep busy - I am writing two small novellas that are non-fiction. One will be called Friendships: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly --- And how to survive them. I am trying to get a number of quotes, anecdotes, etc with regards to how friendships affect every area of our lives.

Laurie:

How to Make People Laugh -- a terrific article.

I'd like to write humor articles.
Any suggestions as to who would be most interested?

Happy holidays,
