Thanks for this link, Susan!

I'd add that it can help to explore all the nooks and crannies of the site, and use the search function. For instance, I've found editors' names in the blog sections of various websites (Woman's Day, for instance) -- and I've searched for "editor" in the search form of the site.

The site map is a brilliant tool that many people don't use....and the About Us or the Media Kit are great sources of information.

If the site has a phone number, calling can be an effective way to get information.

I hope these ideas help -- oh yes, and I've also learned editors' names and email addresses from other writers. I've tweeted a request, and some writers are very willing to help :-) (but don't ask me for emails, because I'm really focused on blogging these days and haven't pitched for several months).

All good things,
Laurie

Janine,

It can be challenging for sure! I did a blog post on this topic last year: http://www.urbanmusewriter.com/2009/04/5-tricks-for-tracking-down-editor.html

Sometimes emailing the generic editor@ address or using the online contact form does the trick. It's worked for several times, although of course it's better if you know a real person's name.

Hi Laurie.
Do you have any tips about identifying online editors? I find that more challenging that traditional pubs. Thanks!

Thanks, Susan...I didn't realize that some online publications ask writers to take photos! A newspaper editor once asked me to take photos -- and she was only paying 20 cents a word. I turned down the assignment...I'm not a photographer. And this was a huge daily newspaper in Vancouver! I'm still shocked.

George, I'm so glad to see you here on Quips & Tips for Successful Writers again! I appreciate your comments so much.....and thanks for the tip about checking recent submission guidelines before you pitch a query letter. Good stuff.

Laurie

Very helpful post. I've had magazine success and a good query letter is key - that and thoroughly understanding the submission guidelines. If you have the patience to wait for responses and if you are able to pitch, you can do pretty well as a freelancer for magazines. Hint: Always check the most recent submission guidelines - magazines change editors more than I change my undies. I'm just sayin'...

Thanks for the mention, Laurie! You're correct that all of the markets in my eBook are paying markets (the lowest one pays around $20/article and the highest paying ones pay $.50-$1/word). I've noticed that some web markets also require writers to take photos or at the very least locate appropriate royalty-free images and resize them. In my opinion, it's not always reasonable to expect a writer to do tons of extra photo work for the same fee, but it's a good skill for writers to have.
