"Laurie PK" has rightly mentioned that a blog should contain both evergreen and normal articles but but an evergreen article is also like "how to" article.

Yes, John Paul, I agree -- sometimes you can only post articles that are relevant here and now. I think a great way to build a great blog is to combine both evergreen and topical articles.

Thanks for your comment!

George, I hear ya -- it CAN be a chore to take a news item (eg, Oprah's last show in 2011) and hang an evergreen hook on it (eg, "10 Things To Do To Get Your Book on Oprah's Book Club List Before the Show Ends!"). It's really effective to find that newsworthy peg and add tried and true tips to it -- I need to try and do it more often.

I agree, John, that health can be topical because of new research....but it'll always be of interest to readers. So it's perfect place to blend evergreen and topical!

Monica, too many evergreen would get boring...and too many topical would make your blog irrelevant quickly (unless you spin it into a historical news site, perhaps). I like your idea of taking keywords based on search terms and writing new articles that way. Now, I'm off to see if that'll work for my recent search terms, here on Quips & Tips!

Thanks for your comments,
Laurie

Interesting - I never actually heard of this "evergreen" concept before! Though it makes sense - I get a lot of hits to my blog via old posts, especially product reviews. And when I'm looking for blog post ideas that will generate a good bit of traffic, I have a look at Google Analytics and see which keywords already drive traffic to my site, then choose a subject around that keyword. But overall, I agree with John - a mix of evergreen and timely pieces works well. Too many evergreen posts would get boring I'd imagine!

I think it's important to create a mix of evergreen and time-bounded articles, especially for your own blog.

Some of the topics you list as evergreen, especially those related to health, can be superseded by more recent research.

Hi Laurie,

I've written for some sites that insist on every article being evergreen. I understand the concept but it can be a real task to take a newsworthy event and turn it into something that will still be relevant in six months - or tomorrow for that matter!

George
