As always, I have to pay income taxes this year...that's one of the struggles of freelance writing and blogging full-time. I might consider paying the government quarterly installments instead of one lump sum every April.

Jennifer,

Thanks for this bookkeeping tip -- it'll definitely help freelance writers do their taxes, because it'll keep them organized! Appreciate it.

Laurie

Hi Laurie,

Thanks for the post! Because I now work with Outright.com, a FREE online bookkeeping service, I have been living and breathing this stuff lately and think Jeff Staley wrote an excellent summary.

Even though I work for them, I do want to recommend Outright.com for freelancers. Before I started blogging for them, I was a happy user. (I actually found them as a client via Twitter when I complimented them on their easy-to-use product.) Since they are a client of mine, I won't shill too much, but will say that they are the easiest, most user-friendly and cheapest (Free!) way I've found to do my books as a freelancer. They even estimate your federal taxes and file 1099s for your contractors.

Thanks again for this important article. Ugh. April 15th is too soon.
