[...] Putting up a personal blog may be the easiest way to start blogging. You get to write about anything you want without anyone telling you that you’re doing it wrong. Review your favorite TV show that nobody else watches? It’s OK. Tell everybody what your cat just coughed up? Nobody’s stopping you. Post random blurry pictures of your bed? Knock yourself out. This approach may not make you relevant beyond your small but loyal circle of readers, but it can help you develop your writing style and your blogging voice. [...]

Hi Shef,

Sometimes it takes patience and time to figure out what you want your blog to say -- what message you want to send to your readers. And, your blog will take its own shape as you keep nourishing it with words and your own personality.

I encourage you to keep blogging what you want to blog about. Let the question of what your message is simmer in the back of your mind...your subconscious (or the Muse!) will reveal the answer over time.

Keep me posted; I'd love to hear how it's going! And I LOVE Indian food, but rarely cook it at home. People like me need your recipes and guidance :-)

Hi thanks so much for writing about this. I've just discovered your site as a very new food blogger. I still am not quite sure who my audience is but I am definitely really enjoying it...more than I thought I would! I have let my writing suck and dealt with it ;)
My question is: I feel like I'm not really sharing anything or advising anyone. I'm simply journaling what I cook (mostly Indian food), thinking it could give others an idea of what to cook. But I haven't decided if I'm going to post my original recipes yet...maybe a few here and there. Anyway, I suppose I need to figure out what message or point am I trying to get across. Thanks!

Gina,

Thanks for commenting -- it's nice to know I'm not alone! Weaving in your personal life and opinions is difficult for some writers...I've been writing in my journal for about 30 years now, and yet I have to remind myself to get personal when I'm blogging. But, getting personal is so important -- and so is striking the right balance between personal but not too personal :-)

Hope to see you in cyberspace soon,
Laurie
