5 Fertility Yoga Tips for Couples Trying to Conceive

What helps one couple get pregnant may not work for another…and these tips for fertility yoga may improve infertility in ways previously unexplored! Yoga can be a natural, organic way to increase male and female fertility levels.

Before the yoga tips, here’s a quip from a yoga teacher:

“Before you’ve practiced, the theory is useless,” says David Williams. “After you’ve practiced, the theory is obvious.”

I don’t know where you are on the infertility roller coaster – but I know that it’s important to be open to trying new things! For more info on yoga for couples coping with infertility, click the pictured Yoga Practices for Infertility. And, read on for an explanation of fertility yoga, plus tips…

5 Fertility Yoga Tips for Couples Who Want to Get Pregnant

1. Be open to trying natural remedies – like fertility yoga. My husband and I haven’t tried fertility yoga because I’m just discovering and researching it. We do regular yoga together, though – and we’re happy try all sorts of ways to conceive a baby (acupuncture, herbal medicines, etc). Before you decide if fertility yoga is hogwash or your possible miracle cure, I encourage you to give it a chance.

2. Do what relaxes you. Fertility treatments – or even just trying to get pregnant - can be stressful and hard on couples coping with infertility. If a few bouts of fertility yoga don’t relax you, or even increases your anxiety levels, then move on to a different complementary therapy. The foundation of successful fertility yoga for couples is that it’s relaxing, energizing, and strengthening.

3. Strive for both relaxation and a physical workout. For fertility yoga to be effective, you need to balance stretching and conditioning your muscles with slow, deep breathing. The idea behind fertility yoga is the simple movement of energy: the poses correct blockages or imbalances in the body, which could be the root of some infertility issues.

4. Focus on certain yoga poses for fertility. This is where a DVD, book, or in-person class comes in handy! There are certain yoga poses that affect fertility by improving hormone levels, increasing circulation to reproductive organs, and stimulating the abdominal and reproductive parts of the body. Some of these fertility yoga poses include Bridge Pose, Child’s Pose, Cobbler’s Pose, and Legs on the Wall Pose.

5. Include your partner in the yoga exercises. Practicing yoga together can bond you and your spouse – and it can be fun! My husband and I do a Sun Salutation every morning before the day begins…it’s not a specific yoga pose for fertility, but it energizes us for the day. And, it’s something we do together, which brings us closer. If you think your partner wouldn’t be into trying yoga, just ask him or her to try it three times. If it’s not working for you, then try something else!

To learn more about improving fertility through yoga, here are some yoga for pregnancy DVDs and books. Also, Yoga For Conception is taught by a yoga teacher who overcame infertility through yoga poses.

Have you tried fertility yoga – and did it help you conceive? I think my hubby and I should add a couple of fertility poses to our bedtime ritual….because it can’t hurt.

Always remember, though: there is no “one size fits all” when it comes to coping with infertility or getting pregnant. Different things work for different people.

I am currently enrolled in a Yoga class. The health benefits are great, I am more relaxed and I can sleep well at night. I’m glad to know it helps fertility, too!

    Thanks for your comment, Jemmah.

I practice yoga at home regularly, too…it helps for so many things! Yoga didn’t help us get pregnant, though. I think that whether or not yoga helps with conceiving a baby depends on the cause of infertility.

  7. Jimmy says:

I started taking Yoga lessons last month and i am amazed of how it can take away the stress of my mind and body.

  8. Many yoga classes are out there, and you may be turned off if you pick one that does not suit your personality and state of physical fitness. For most beginners, a hatha or vinyasa class will be most appropriate, depending on whether you want a slow or fast-paced class. These are basic styles, and you can always try something fancier later.

  9. Thanks for your yoga tips! It’s good to remember that there are different types of yoga, and we need to practice different ones until we find what works for us. I like Power Yoga the best :-)

  10. Claryssa says:

It can be included into one of natural pregnant tips. The most popular method to get pregnant naturally is now using herbal remedies. But I believe yoga will get popular too.

Does surya namaskar interfere with conception?

  12. Claryssa, thanks for your tidbit about herbal remedies to get pregnant. I haven’t researched those, but think it would make a great article to write!

Ratna, I don’t think surya namaskar (sun salutation) interferes with the ability to get pregnant. However, your best bet is to read a book about fertility yoga for couples — the “Yoga Practices for Infertility” DVD featured in the article above has some great tips.

    Blessings,
    Laurie
