5 Foods That Make Your Menstrual Cycle Regular

What Are the Best Foods to Regulate Your Menstrual Cycle?
Yes, certain foods can make your menstrual cycle regular! If you struggle with irregular periods or amenorrhea (no periods at all), don’t skip these tips.
“When estrogen is high during their cycle, women are more at ease with themselves,” writes Rebecca Booth in The Venus Week. “They are more confident performing tasks and accomplishing goals and more socially agile and bale to articulate themselves more fully and clearly.”
But, if your period is irregular or nonexistent, you won’t benefit from the effects of high estrogen. The point of highest estrogen is your pre-ovulatory stage.
If you’re on a 28 day cycle, ovulation occurs from days 12-16 (though it varies, depending on your stress level, the foods you eat, the exercise you’re doing, etc). This means that pre-ovulation occurs on about days 8-11 (but again, it varies from woman to woman).
For more facts about your period – and how amazing it is! – read The Venus Week: Discover the Powerful Secret of Your Cycle…at Any Age by Rebecca Booth, MD.
And, here are five foods to that can help you get regular periods…
5 Foods That Make Your Menstrual Cycle Regular
Your first step in regulating your periods is figuring out what’s causing an irregular menstrual cycle. Once you determine the cause, you’ll be better able to find an effective treatment. Read 6 Things That Cause Irregular Periods.
Omega-3 fatty acids – salmon, sardines, etc
The blood vessels in your ovaries are tiny, which makes them vulnerable to damage and poor circulation. Smoking, obesity, and high cholesterol can negatively affect your ovarian blood vessels, which blocks hormones and blood flow. Fish oils enhance blood circulation, reduce damage from free radicals, fight the effects of aging, and increase dopamine (which improves your mood!).
Dr Booth recommends adding a fish oil supplement to your diet, instead of eating a high fish diet (because of the mercury in some tuna, swordfish, mackerel, etc).
Non-white foods
Most natural foods are not white, so you can assume that if a food is white, it is probably processed to the point of being unhealthy! To make your menstrual cycle regular, avoid white flour, sugar, white potatoes, white bread, white pasta, and white rice. They disrupt your menstrual cycle by creating insulin surges that result in fat storage. This excess fat storage negatively affects ovulation and your periods – and can cause irregular periods.
Protein – cottage cheese, lean meats, nuts
“Finding sources of balanced protein can be a challenge for busy women, but it is a must for hormonal balance, writes Dr Booth in The Venus Week. The more you balance your hormones, the more regular your menstrual cycle will be. Plant proteins are especially good for enhancing fertility and hormonal balance: almonds, walnuts, peanuts, cheese, hard boiled eggs, soy chips, hummus, canned sardines, and edamame.
Vitamin D – perhaps take a supplement
This vitamin improves communication between your cells, which stabilizes your hormones. Vitamin D is also vital in cancer protection – especially breast, colon, ovarian, and prostate cancers. “Vitamin D is a little hard to come by in food,” writes Dr Booth. Eat vitamin D-fortified milk products, tuna, egg yolks, salmon, sardines, and (yuck) cod liver oil.
To increase your vitamin D and make your menstrual cycle regular, make sure you getting enough sunlight. Where you live and the color of your skin determines how much time you should spend in the sun, but my research tells me that the average North American should spend about 10 minutes in the sun about 2-3 times per week.
Dark chocolate!
“Chocolate contains flavenoids, which have estrogen-like activity and help improve circulation by reducing platelet clumping, writes Dr Booth in The Venus Week. Flavenoids also enhance microcirculation in the ovaries and endocrine glands, and increase dopamine (a “feel good” hormone).
Not just any old chocolate will do: eat dark chocolate that contains at least 70% cocoa solids.

Hello,
I am 36yrs old and still a virgin. All my life i’ve had painful periods until 2007 when my periods stopped totally. I WENT TO THE DOCTOR and they gave me birth control pills that made me bleed for 2 weeks. After that, i have not had a period for 2 yeras plus. I am really worried and dont know what to do. Though last yera, i had a little spotting in August and October but since then till now nothing at all.
Could it be its because i am still a virgin at my age
The doctors made me take a hormonal test and the result said that i had, HORMONAL IMBALANCE.
Pls, i need advise
Thank you
Sonu and Jayven ~ I’m sorry to hear that you’re having trouble getting pregnant. It’s so frustrating – I know. It’s good that you’ve seen a gynecologist about it, because that is the best way to get help. Remember that it takes time to regulate your menstrual cycle and conceive a baby! It takes most couples a year on average to get pregnant, which means that many couples take longer than a year.
Here are two articles that may help:

Nelu ~ if you haven’t gotten your period and you’re worried about it, then you need to see a gynecologist in person. There is no way I can tell you why your menstrual cycle is MIA (missing in action)! You need to get tested in person, by a medical doctor.

Hi Ank,
I don’t know anything about the T Regulate tablet and getting pregnant. Have you talked about it with your gynecologist or fertility doctor? That’s the best way to determine if you’ll be able to regulate your menstrual cycle and get pregnant.
Let me know how it goes – I’d love to hear what your doc says about it!
Blessings,
Laurie
i have irregular cycles…. and m trying for conception. this month i missed my period and pregnancy test is negative. if i take T Regulate tablet for 5 days i will get a period … but can i try for pregnancy after the period or i have to take 21 contraceptive after that to stimulate myself and try for pregnancy……is T Regulate tablet help me to conceive??? please reply
Dear Emily,
I don’t know how old you are, but women get their periods at very different ages. Not everyone gets her period at age 11, or age 14!
My best advice is to stop worrying about getting your period. You WILL get your period when your body is ready to menstruate. It takes time for hormone levels to return to normal after an eating disorder – sometimes months.
Eat a wide variety of healthy foods – and avoid sugar, caffeine, and excess fat. Running 3 times a week should be fine, if your doctor said it is!
You might also want to do things that reduce stress and make you happy — this will help you sleep, and help balance your hormones. What makes you feel good about yourself and your life? Do that every day! Or every week
I hope this helps, and wish you all the best.
Blessings,
Laurie
Hi all,
I’m sorry, but I can’t offer medical advice about your menstrual cycles. Each woman’s body is unique and special, and there is no way any woman can get good, solid health advice from the internet!
To get advice on your specific period problems, you need to talk to a doctor in person. If you’ve seen one doctor and are still having problems, I encourage you to get a second opinion.
Please be careful about seeking medical advice on the internet. It’s fine to read about the types of foods that make your menstrual cycle regular, but it’s not good to try to get a diagnosis or specific health advice from a website.
Blessings,
Laurie
mam i am 23 years old girl my height is 4.2 feet my weight is 50 kg & mam i have a problem that only one time in the age of 16 years i get periods after that i never get periods mam what i do
Hello, i am 20 years old and since i was 15 i had my period for 3 days and then they will leave for 2 days and come back for another 3 days. Was wonderimg if there is anything i could do so it could be regular
hi! i am 15 5″2 and about 108 pounds. i just recovered from an eating disorder (i was about 85 pounds at my lowest). i have never had my period but my doctor predicted that if i did not have the eating disorder i would have gotten it at the beginning of the past school year.
i am now focusing on trying to get it and hoping that i did not lose it for good. i am running 3 days a week for about 30 minutes and i have (i think) a normal amount of fat in my diet.
i don’t know what i can do to get it back. will eating these foods really help and are there other foods in addition? should i get more sleep because sometimes i don’t get enough?
Thanks!

I also make ultrasound last february and the result its normal, my ovaries are normal and my uterus is normal but i have thick endometrium.then now, i take duphaston but instead to induce heavy bleeding but no effect its desame only. what should i do?im worried with my period can you give me advice..?thnks
Dear Meenu and Perkha,
It sounds like you’re in the same boat: long dry spells of no menstrual cycle at all. It sounds like your hormones are out of balance, which means you need to find ways to balance them. Balancing them, however, depends on the reason they’re out of whack.
Your best bet is to go see a doctor, and find out why you cycle isn’t regular. Then, you can focus on ways to regulate it.
Let me know how it goes – what the doc says!
Blessings,
Laurie
Hello CourtLynn,
I’m so sorry to hear the pain you’re in! That’s terrible. Have you talked to a doctor? A friend of mine has a daughter suffers from the same pain during her menstrual cycle. She’s going to an acupuncturist, and has found it helpful — but it took about six months for her hormones to balance and her cycles to be less painful.
I think you should get checked by both a medical doctor and a naturopathic physician. Don’t suffer by yourself anymore…get tested, and start your journey to painfree periods!
Blessings,
Laurie
Hello Abhilasha, Swapna, and Swetha,
As you can see, you’re not alone in having irregular menstrual cycles! But you must be careful about getting medical advice on the internet. My articles are good for basic tips on foods that make menstrual cycles regular, but I can’t give you specific medical advice.
If you haven’t gone to the doctor, you need to go see one. There could be all sorts of things going on — but don’t be worried or scared. Often, irregular cycles just require a re-balancing of hormones. But the only way to know for sure what’s causing your irregular cycle is to get checked out by a doctor in person.
If you’ve already seen a doctor, like Swetha has, I recommend getting a second opinion. Different doctors have different types of advice and medication.
Another thing I recommend is trying naturopathic remedies, such as acupuncture, to balance your hormones. But first, you have to find out the reason your periods are irregular. If you don’t know why your cycle is so off-balance, you won’t be able to treat it properly.
I hope this helps. Go to the doctor, and come back and let me know what he or she said — and how it worked!
Blessings,
Laurie

Hey!!!!!!!
I am 16, my height is 163 cm, weight is almost 80 kgs and my periods are not regular. They come after 2 or 3 months for almost 14 days. I have not consulted any gynecologist yet. Please give me some tips to regulate my periods and lose weight.
Also my period has come anywhere from 5 days late to 2 weeks!! I’ve heard it could be due to stress or nervousness, but I never know when it’s going to start, or how to regulate this. My mom said it’s because I’m still young but my friends are having theirs normally.
Dear Laurie,
I am 16 years old and have been getting my period for the past 3 years. However every month I am in so much pain from my menstrual cramps I can’t go to school, I can’t sit still, I can’t sleep, I cry immensly etc. This pain only lasts the first two days of my 7 day period. I have taken medicine like Midol Complete and Ibuprofen but they just don’t help at all. I am not obese nor am I over active. I eat normally but the pain still comes. I don’t want to live in fear of my period for the years to come. I don’t want to be 23 in my dorm room crying like a child because of my cramps. Is there anything that can stop this? ):
dear laurie,
im 23, usually my periods are regular. worse case scenario 3-4days delay which does not happen often. this time around its a complete chaos. in may my menses came around the 12th so was expecting it to come around the same time this month. its already june 28th and no signs of it coming. not having my menses in its due time makes me irritated and i tend to get angry real fast. i’ve tried coke and paracetamol, drank pineapple juice… nothing works. and im sure i am not pregnant, zero possibility. tq. :S
Dear Prachi ~ I’m sorry to hear you’re not getting your period, and you’re not pregnant. Are you trying to get pregnant? You may find How Ovulation Predictor Kits Work helpful.
Dear Sindhu ~ It’s different for every woman, but a woman can get pregnant the first time she has intercourse. Other women never get pregnant because of “female problems” that range from menstrual disruptions to endometriosis to PCOS. And, menstrual cycles are also different for every woman! Some women get their period every 28 days like clockwork, while others are very irregular.
Blessings,
Laurie
Dear Jessica,
I’m so sorry to hear you’ve had your period for 44 days — that’s awful. It would drive me crazy!
Make sure you’re taking an iron supplement, because you’re losing a lot of blood and iron.
I don’t blame you for wanting to be healthy naturally, and I believe you CAN get regular, normal periods without resorting to drugs.
My advice is to talk to a naturopathic physician – or maybe even two. They don’t prescribe medications that alter our natural physical health, and they focus on balancing a woman’s hormones so her menstrual cycle is regular naturally. An acupuncturist stabilizes qi energy, which can balance hormones.
Call a few naturopaths in your area, and see if they can give you a free consultation.
Let me know how it goes!
Blessings,
Laurie
Dear Aaliya,
As much as I would love to help you get a regular menstrual cycle and get pregnant, I’m afraid I can’t give medical advice. I encourage you to seek a second opinion from a doctor. Have you talked to a naturopathic physician yet? That’s another option to explore.
Please be careful about seeking medical advice from the internet. The internet can be a great place for factual information, but can also be hazardous to your health! Only get medical advice from a doctor who examines you in person.
Blessings,
Laurie

Ginger,
Thank u for ur comment. It made me feel alot better knowin im not the only one experiencing this probem with singulair. I too experienced mood changes, irritability ndepression. Its a shame bc singulair sems to b the only thing that seems to work for me sice i’ve had asthma/allergies (about 20 yrs). Im schedulin an appointment with my doctor and def gettin rid of singulair. These side effects just aren’t worth it to me. Thank u again for your post.
Nicole
Nicole,
I have had regular periods my entire life. So regular, in fact, that I can set reminders on my cell phone alarm months in advance. I too started taking Singulair for allergies. The first month my period came on schedule. 14 days later i had another period, and again 12 days after that.I had lower abdominal pain which seemed to radiate from my overies. Also, i became VERY depressed. I actually bought a life insurance policy for 1 million dollars because i was convinced that the irregular periods and pain were a sign of impending doom and my children(4) which are all in college, would be left to fend for themselves. So… I went to my doctor and had an exam. the results were perfectly normal. I have no doubt that Singulair caused my problems as i have stopped taking the drug, and am back to normal now. I am disappointed with the side-effects because Singulair really did control my allergies better than anything else i had ever taken. Plus, my sister takes it and never has any side-effects. Everyone is different i guess.
I hope this helps,
ginger
Dear Karma and Nathalie,
Some women have irregular cycles for no reason at all – and that’s normal for them. Other women get their period every 28 days on the nose, without fail.
But I bet most women are like me: I usually get my period every 28 days, give or take a day or two. For instance, my period is due next Sunday, yet it came today (Tues). It’s a whole five days early, which is unusual.
I think our bodies aren’t robots that perform like clockwork. We can expect irregularities and oddities — especially when it comes to periods and hormones! So many factors affect our hormones, which affect our periods.
That said, however, my advice to both of you is to go see your doctor, or get a second opinion if you’re worried about the results you already got. I can’t tell you if your bodies or periods are normal…you need to get checked out in person.
Karma, I know your doc did the tests, and I think that if you’re still concerned, you should get a second opinion. That’s the best way to figure out if you’re healthy or not. I don’t know if you should be concerned.
Nathalie, I think you need to talk to a naturopathic doctor if you want regular periods without taking the pill. Or, talk to your doctor or a different medical doctor — and tell her or him that you don’t want to be on the pill.
Go talk to a professional in person, and let me know how it goes!
Blessings,
Laurie
Hi,
I’m 20 years old and for the last two years I was taking birth control because I had irregular period, and it was working perfectly for me: however, two months ago I stopped taking them and my period also stop. I do not want to depend on pills to get my period. Can you please give me an advice? I REALLY NEED HELP.
Hello,
I’m 26, and I still have irregular periods; by irregular I mean
I depend on my body to give me clues so that I know when I’ll have it.
I do get my period every month (so in that sense it’s regular), but not at the same
time (which is why I’m saying irregular). I had hormone tests done before, and
everything was normal; also, I just had an ultrasound check on my uterus,
and again, the doctor said everything’s normal.
should i be concerned?
thank you.
regards,
karma
Hi Nicole,
Yes, weight changes (gain or loss) and prescription medication can change your cycle. Something to consider is why you gained the weight? Sometimes weight gain is caused by health issues, which could also be affecting your menstrual cycle. So, the weight gain may not be the cause of irregular menstruation…it’s whatever caused the weight gain that is also causing the cramping, bloating, etc.
I’m sorry you can’t afford to go to the doctor — because that’s the ONLY way to get good, sound health advice. You need to talk to someone in person about your periods, asthma, cramps, etc. Online help is good for factual information (like what foods help regulate hormones!), but not good for personal medical advice.
So, please try to find a way to pay for a doctor’s visit. Is there a low-cost clinic in your area?
Another thing is to try calling a nurses help line. In Canada, our provinces all have nurses on call 24 hours a day; anyone can call for health advice. You could do an internet search for “Healthlink BC” and think about calling a nurse directly.
I hope this helps, and that you get to the root cause of your irregular menstrual cycle. Let me know how it goes, okay?
Blessings,
Laurie
Hi Laurie, im 23 yrs old n ive had irregular periods for years. Since i first got my period wen i was 11. It would normally skip a month maybe 1 or 2xs a yr. As i got older it seem to increase to 2 to 3 months n a row. Wen i was 16 my mother and i asked my doctor n she told us it was normal especially bc i weighed only 100lbs at the time. I also was told it could b because of stress and the way i was dieting (i woukd normally skip breakfast bc i was in such a rush in the am. However she never said anything about me needin to see a gyno so i never been to one. Im not/have not been sexually active, im still a virgin but recently ive been under some stress, and i recently started taking singulair for my asthma and allergies and i also use a rescue inhaler. I noticed since i started takin the singulair ive experienced some of the side effects likeirritability and tiredness and although this isnt listed as a side effect ive also havent had a period for abput 3 mnths which is around the time i started takin it and the last one i had was very very light n lasted about 2days. And i have gained 6 or 7lbs within the last 6months. Im 5’5 n weight 135. I was wondering could my weight gain and the asthma medicine be a reason why my periods seem to b more irregular than usual? I experience the crampin and bloating every month like im goin to get my period but i never get it. And im worried this could affect me if i want to have kids. I cant afford to go to a doctor right now bc i cant afford insurance. So idk wat to do as far as regulatin my period in a way that i will beable to afford. And i know weight loss can contribute to irregularity but can weight gain even if its not that much contribute to irregularity as well. It seems ive gained most of the weight in the abdominal area. Idk if this could be an issue as well.
Hi Susan,
Please don’t be scared! Our bodies are weird, and hardly ever act “normal.” That is, there always seems to be something going on with them that never happened before — this is just part of being human.
Try not to freak out or be overly fearful of what’s happening, because chances are it’s just your body developing.
Sometimes teenagers – especially girls who just got their periods – have very irregular cycles. You may be one of those girls, who gets her period once every 6 weeks or who has spotty periods or who can never predict when her next period is!
I don’t know if you just have irregular menstrual cycles, or if something else is causing missed periods. The best way to find out is to talk to your doctor or the school nurse.
Try not to worry too much or get scared…but do talk to someone in person, preferable someone who is qualified in the health field.
Blessings,
Laurie
im thirteen and my period came and went as usual. but then this month it came for a week and then after 5 days it came again and then after a week it here again. what should i do? im really scared
Hi Sam,
You probably won’t get pregnant very quickly if you’re not getting your period, because that means you may not be ovulating. Your best bet is to talk to a doctor and find ways to make your menstrual cycle regular.
I’m curious why you want to get pregnant…are you ready for a baby?
Blessings,
Laurie
hi, im 17 & i have not been getting my period for 11 months almost a year. i want to try for a baby but can i do this without getting my period?
thanks laurie for your reply…
Hi Louise,
If you’re on a 21 day pill cycle, then I think your period should come on the 22nd day. But, you need to check the instructions that come with that particular pill! I don’t know what pill you’re taking.
The instructions should tell you what day you can expect your period, and you may find that your periods are extremely regular and reliable when you’re taking the pills. Many women love them, even if they didn’t have really irregular periods.
I hope this helps – and I hope your periods get regular!
Blessings,
Laurie
Hi Varsha,
In addition to eating the right foods to make your menstrual cycle regular, you might want to consult a naturopathic doctor. They can often recommend supplements and herbs that can regulate your hormones.
Please be careful about getting specific medical advice on the internet. The internet is a great place to learn general information, such as how to regulate your periods, but it’s not the place for specific health information. For that, you must talk to a doctor in person.
You might also want to get a second opinion, from a different obgyn. Perhaps that one can help you get off the hormones, and into a more natural way to get a regular cycle.
I’m sorry I can’t be more helpful!
Blessings,
Laurie
