What to Look for When Dating – 7 Tips for Successful Dates

What do you look for when you’re dating? These tips for successful dates are from a relationship coach who helps couples strengthen their romantic relationships. Mary Jo Fay, author of The Seven Secrets of Love: Unlocking the Mysteries Behind Truly Great Relationships and creator of the Signal 4 Singles Program, shares her tips for great dating here…

Before the tips, a quip:

“In emotionally healthy relationships, things really aren’t overly complicated or difficult,” says Fay. “Couples fight fair, look out for one another, and truly have an understanding about walking in their partner’s shoes.”

A romantic, healthy relationship starts from the first date or the first meeting — which is what these tips for successful dating are all about! What to Look for When Dating – 7 Tips for Successful Dates

1. Know and love yourself inside and out. You can’t love anyone effectively unless you love yourself. This may also include doing some self-growth work … especially if you’ve been wounded by a past lover. 2. Know what you want in a relationship, and don’t settle. If you don’t like cigarettes, for example, don’t make exceptions for the guy who smokes. This will be a problem sooner or later. Further, marrying this partner with the idea that they’re going to quit for you is a big mistake. Don’t settle for second best.

3. Listen to your gut instincts! You know when things just don’t “feel” right in a relationship. To start a successful, healthy, romantic relationship, don’t make excuses for your partner’s behaviors because you’re so in love with the idea of being married. Trust your gut, and you’ll avoid dating disasters.

4. Understand that “What you see, is what you get.” Don’t try to change someone to be something they are not. And thinking that they’ve got the “potential” to turn out to be a great mate is magical thinking that leads to relationship breakdown.
