5 Ways to Improve Bad Skin  

1. Reconsider the toner. “I don’t usually recommend toners, although many people believe that toners are a key part of good skin care,” writes Dr Day in Forget the Facelift. If you like using your skin toner or find that it really works (or both), then keep using it for healthy skin. However, a good skin care regimen doesn’t require toner. 

2. Establish your morning skin care regime. In the morning, wash your face with a gentle cleanser or mild soap. Apply a light moisturizer with an SPF (sun protection factor) of 15 or higher – and stroke upward and outward, not downwards. Then, use a foundation with more sunscreen protection, or use sunscreen that’s made for facial skin. 3. Establish your nighttime skin care regime. “If you wear contact lenses, remove them before cleansing, and try to get the hang of taking each lens out directly from your eye rather than pulling the skin around your eye taut, unless otherwise instructed by your eye doctor,” writes Dr Day in Forget the Facelift. For healthy skin, apply a rich moisturizer before you go to bed – and don’t moisturize your nose (it’s generally an oily skin spot). To give moisturizer time to sink in, apply it 30 minutes before you put your face on the pillow. 

4. Use exfoliating & firming masks. To improve bad skin, exfoliate once a week for healthy skin, and use a firming mask once a month. Exfoliation helps rid the outer layer of your skin of old dead cells, while firming masks tighten pores and improve blood circulation to your skin. 

5. Eat anti-aging foods. In general, foods that are good for your body are also good for your skin. Anti-aging foods include sunflower seeds, tomatoes, peaches, spinach, papaya, and pumpkin for Vitamin A. “Vitamin C is an especially important component of the anti-aging process because it is essential in the production of collagen,” writes Dr Day. Eat bell peppers, citrus fruits, berries, pears, cucumber, green peas, navy beans, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and barley for the anti-aging effects of Vitamin C. The B-complex vitamins keep your sink healthy and should be part of any skin care regimen: meats, strawberries, yogurt, cranberries, squash, and tomatoes.
