Anti-Aging Tips for Women – 3 Ways to Look and Feel Younger
These anti-aging tips for women are from Cheryl Forberg, the nutritionist for NBC’s The Biggest Loser. She offers three ways to look and feel younger (and by the way, these anti-aging tips are for both women and men!).
Before her tips, a quip:
“The body is a sacred garment. It’s your first and last garment; it is what you enter life in and what you depart life with, and it should be treated with honor.” ~ Martha Graham.
Treating your body with respect, love, and acceptance can help you look young and feel young. For more healthy aging tips, click Positively Ageless: A 28-Day Plan for a Younger, Slimmer, Sexier You, which Forberg wrote. And read on for three ways to look and feel young…
Anti-Aging Tips for Women – 3 Ways to Look and Feel Younger
1. Drink lots of water to keep your skin healthy. Staying well hydrated keeps your skin’s cells plump and firm. When you don’t drink enough water, your skin will get dry and wrinkled. Think of a bunch of grapes: firm and smooth and fresh. Leave them in a hot, dry environment so they lose their fluid, and what do you get? Raisins . . . soft, deeply wrinkled raisins. This image probably oversimplifies what happens to your skin’s cells when you don’t drink enough water, but the point is that your body is filled with fluid. You need to be constantly replacing it.
Plus, water washes toxins out of your body, helps bring nutrients to your cells, and keeps all your processes working properly — on the inside and the outside of your body.
2. Eat foods rich in antioxidants. Your skin has a natural antioxidant system to neutralize free radicals and protect cells from damage. However, as you get older, your antioxidant protection drops, particularly in sun-damaged skin. Eating a diet rich in antioxidants can help protect your skin and keep you looking and feeling younger. Antioxidants are an effective anti-aging tip for women.
According to a paper in a 2006 issue of the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, researchers around the world are searching for ways to prevent the skin damage — particularly skin cancer — resulting from free radicals. Laboratory work indicates that antioxidants such as green and black tea, resveratrol (found in grapes), the spice curcumin (also known as turmeric), and vitamin C may prove to be helpful in protecting your skin and reducing wrinkles and rashes. It’s easy to forget about protecting the health of your insides because you can’t see them. Let your skin be a constant reminder to make healthy choices to reduce signs of aging.
In addition to its antioxidant protection, vitamin C plays an important role in the production of collagen, a protein that provides structure and softness to your skin. Selenium is a component of your body’s antioxidant enzymes, and it’s been shown to help protect skin from damage from UV rays.
3. Eat a balanced diet to help you look and feel younger. Since a lack of protein or iron has been associated with hair loss, make sure you eat protein throughout the day from high-quality sources such as fish and poultry. Iron-rich foods include clams and whole grain cereals, and can help you achieve your beauty goals. Also, ask your doctor to check your iron levels to ensure that you have enough iron in your body. Other nutrients, such as omega-3 fatty acids and zinc, are also associated with healthy hair.
Forberg also recommends that you “aim to meet your nutritional needs with your diet, and use caution with nutrient supplements-excessive amounts of particular nutrients, such as vitamin A, may influence hair loss.”
