The best tip on how to save more money is to figure out your spending weakness. For instance, do you spend money on DVDs or lattes? Late fines or speeding tickets? Then, focus on saving money in those areas.

My wife is great at using up spare change in her wallet, for the daily/weekly essentials or things we'll buy with cash. I give my loose change to her instead of allowing it to collect in jars which can take months or years to get around to rolling up. We use credit cards (joint account) which is paid automatically in full each month. We also budget for all costs at least a year out, including retirement savings and tax exempt unregistered savings and have emergency reserves for unexpected expenses. As soon as there is excess money in our accounts it is transfered to our mortgage.

Saving money most certainly leads to creating wealth.

Thanks for your comments -- I, too, like the idea of putting money in crystal bowls or glasses to save it!

My problem isn't saving money, though. My problem is SPENDING it. I don't like to shop, and the only thing I spend my money on is groceries, vehicle maintenance and gas, vacations, and our weekly dinner out at a restaurant (I love sushi!). Maybe once we're mortgage free, I'll spend more money...but I doubt it. Well, I could see myself taking a couple vacations overseas a year instead of just one :-)

I agree with Jonas, that saving money is the first step to creating wealth.

I like the idea of putting cash in crystal jars to save it. I think seeing money will help you save more money.

I don't agree with John R., though. These tips can help you create wealth if you learn what to do with all the money you save. You could invest it in real estate, stocks, business, or other things that earn money.

Congrats Laurie on being debt and mortgage free soon - that must feel great!

One thing that worked well for me to create savings and spend less is by putting spare change into jars (or glasses). We have several crystal glasses (and a jar and a bowl) for various denominations and it doesn't take long to add up (plus it means this change is not being spent mindlessly on things that add up).

I've also found making a commitment to not spend over a certain amount on my credit card helps too (or some people make a habit of paying off the card each month and that way the spending has to fit within their budget).

Thanks for the tips,

These are really basic tips for saving money, but as you said -- they work. I don't know if they'll create WEALTH, but they'll definitely stop you from spending money you don't have.
