girls halloween costumes

Here are two princesses on Halloween – aren’t they pretty? (Photo courtesy of stevendepolo, via flickr).

If you’re wondering how you should dress up on Halloween, check out these costume ideas for girls!

They range from Harry Potter’s Gryffindor to a box of popcorn, from “What are little girls made of?” to the Alice in Wonderland’s Mad Hatter.

Before the tips, a quip:

“When black cats prowl and pumpkins gleam, may luck be yours on Halloween.” ~ Author Unknown.

Halloween doesn’t have to be about black cats, scary witches, and bad luck — it can be about one of the most popular kids’ books of our time.

What about Harry Potter’s Gryffindor as a girls’ costume idea? It’s less typical than a fairy tale princess, and perhaps a bit more magical.

And, here are more girls costume ideas — mostly homemade…

How Should You Dress Up on Halloween?

These costume ideas aren’t your traditional witches, princesses, or ghosts. They’re a little more generic than that, and would probably work for boys’ Halloween costumes, too.

In fact, if your girl doesn’t think she should dress up in a traditional “girls Halloween costume”, read Boys Halloween Costumes for different ideas.

What are Little Girls Made Of?

Take sugar and spice and everything nice, and pin or paste them to your daughter’s princess dress. I have to admit that this girls Halloween costume is easier as a “What are little boys made of?” — frogs and snails and puppy dog tails!! I also have to admit that I don’t approve of the way girls and boys are portrayed in this costume idea, but what can I say? To each her own.

Not a Happy Camper

This girls costume idea is the opposite of being a “happy camper.” She wears her regular camping gear, but it’s a disastrous camping trip! Her t-shirt and shorts have rips and burns in them, as well as sticks and dead leaves. You can even smear burnt marshmallows on her arms and legs (gross!). Put fake spider and mosquito bites all over her face. You can even add a rubber spider to this girls costume idea. Halloween costume for girls is especially funny if she went camping last summer – and hated it!

Box of Popcorn

Take a refrigerator box and cut it to fit the girl you’re dressing up. Paint it with red and white stripes, like an old-fashioned box of popcorn. Glue popped popcorn around the top of box. When I wonder what I should dress up as for Halloween, I often think of this one because it’s an easy costume to make at home.

Jack in the Box (a very young girl’s Halloween costume)

This Halloween costume is more for a girl BABY, not a girl child. Put a large box over her baby carriage, with a flap on top as the lid. Paint the box like one of those old Jack in the Box games, and put in a crank. Dress your girl as a clown, with a jester’s hat. If your daughter is too little too think about what she should dress up for on Halloween, you can simply box her up :-)

Lost Airline Luggage

Take a cheap vinyl garment bag – or an expensive bag from the dry cleaners – and punch holes out for her arms and legs. Attach some stickers to the bag — preferably real airline stickers with destinations, etc. Add a sticker that says “Unclaimed.” This girls costume idea is perfect for families who travel a lot. Don’t leave your girl alone in this Halloween costume, though.

Snoopy in His Airplane

Remember Snoopy and his little white plane? This is a great costume for girls: she can wear white clothes, and make a tail out of white felt cloth. Buy or make an aviator cap. Complete the Snoopy picture with black flying goggles and a long scarf around her neck. You can use long wire in the scarf to give it a wind-blown effect. You can even put a Snoopy mask on her face, so everyone sees right away what her costume is!
