I have always given myself a cash allowance for spending money. When I was fresh out of school and paying off student loans, trying to save a nest egg and making peanuts, my allowance allowed for a few treats. Two pints of beer a week at a bar, a slurpee, one meal out, maybe a movie or other ‘big ticket’ item. I trained myself to proportion the money so it would last two weeks (to avoid transaction fees at the bank). Now that I have been doing this for so many years it is easy and often I have cash left over at the end of the month. Budgeting is key to building wealth.

Thanks for your comment! I agree that the fifth tip (about making money savings tips stick) is worth thinking about….because it’s so easy to read and forget tips about saving money fast! The trick is to remember those tips, and actually apply them to everyday life.

I like your habit of using a prepaid card. That way, you don’t give into temptations that can be obstacles to achieving your financial goals.

Really good tips for saving/budgeting money. I was especially interested in #5 – “Figure out how to make money savings tips stick.”

That’s probably one of the most difficult but one thing I’ve found that works is to separate out my funds and put any money for “extra expenses” on a prepaid card, that way, it’s away from my bank account and I can only spend what’s loaded onto the card.
