Beauty Goals: 8 Organic Cosmetics and Natural Makeup Tips
If you’re into eco-friendly beauty goals, check out these natural makeup tips and organic cosmetics. For instance, if you want to color your hair, but aren’t thrilled about the chemicals soaking into your scalp, I’ve got natural alternatives. Me, I also have to worry about the chemicals soaking into our septic tank and killing the good bacteria. To lighten footprints, stay healthy, and achieve beauty goals, here are several ideas for natural beauty cosmetics.
But first, a quip from healthy woman and writer Adria Vasil.
“No one’s asking you to put down your makeup brush and go bare,” writes Vasil in her bestselling book Ecoholic. “And, luckily, going green doesn’t mean giving up on good eyeshadow.”

Beauty Goals: 8 Organic Cosmetics and Natural Makeup Tips
1. Beware of the word “natural.” Just because a product proudly bears a ”100% all natural beauty product” badge doesn’t mean that it’s an organic cosmetic. Since the words “natural” or “organic” aren’t regulated in the beauty industry (at this point), you could be mislead to believe in something that’s not true.
2. Organic hair dyes. Highlights and low-lights that don’t touch your scalp are natural ways to stay youthful and healthy - henna is a good example. However, hair dyes haven’t been proven to harm your scalp, body or baby if you’re pregnant. Still, it seems healthier and more natural to use ammonia-free hair coloring products - especially if you’re a septic-tank owner like me (chemicals kill the friendly bacteria in the tank). Shop online or at organic or health food stores for natural hair dyes, but be forewarned that most hair dyes do contain PPD (p-phenylelediamine).
3. Natural waxing products. To get rid of extra body hair and achieve your beauty goals, use paraffin-free waxes. “Look for natural waxes such as beeswax or tree resin-derived products, like Parissa” writes Vasil in Ecoholic. Other organic cosmetics for getting rid of unwanted body hair include sugaring and threading.
4. Natural deodorants & antiperspirants. Traditional antiperspirants contain aluminum and/or zirconium, which reduce perspiration. Antiperspirants have not been found proven harmful, though some people suggest there’s a link between aluminum and Alzheimer’s (it’s still being researched). Natural rock salt crystals or deodorant stones can be effective, depending on your body type - remember that what works for me might not work for you! Plus, organic cosmetics may provide peace of mind, which helps keeps you mentally healthy and focused on achieving healthy beauty goals!
5. Organic lipsticks, lip glosses, mascaras. Natural makeup products are made by companies such as Suncoat, Lavera, Ecco Bella, and the Organic Make-up Company in Toronto. Their organic cosmetics include cleansers, masks, scrubs, foundation, eyeliners and mascaras - all of which help you achieve your beauty goals. Certified organic makeup is tested on humans, synthetic-free, chemical-free, and can even be vegan.
6. Natural nail polishes & removers. “Nail polish is one of the most toxic beauty products around,” writes Vasil in Ecoholic. “Breathing a lot of this stuff in can damage your kidneys, brain and liver.” She’s talking about the carcinogen formaldehyde and neurotoxin toluene found in nail polish removers - you can smell how bad it is! For organic cosmetics, try No-Miss and Suncoat, which are found in health stores. To saving yourself some running around, and shop online for eco-friendly makeup.
7. Organic hand sanitizers. Mainstream sanitizers can contain petroleum-based ingredients, artificial perfumes, and coal tar-derived tars. So, organic cosmetic hand sanitizers are healthier…To achieve your natural beauty goals, check out Plant Power - they make natural hand sanitizers from lavender, oregano oils, and citronella.
8. Natural bath products. Bulk bath salts not only reduce packaging waste, they’re also not made from synthetics or petroleum products. “Ditch the dodgy synthetics and splurge on some organic, wildcrafted bath oils and bath teas, or just reach into your kitchen cupboards and drizzle 2 tablespoons of organic almond oil or olive oil into the water,” writes Vasil. “Add a few drops of your fave essential oils to sweeten things up.” Then you can breathe a sigh of relief, knowing you’re soaking the natural way.
